Ava Wight SVCC volleyball

By Devrin Thomas

Ava Wight, one of the newest recruits to the SVCC volleyball program, has gotten off to a fiery start to her college career.  Ava’s journey to the  SVCC volleyball program though was not like  other college athletes.

When asked about her recruiting process out of high school Ava stated she initially  was not intending on playing college volleyball actually until she was contacted by Coach Howell, head coach of the volleyball team here at sauk, around the end of her junior season, and was invited to attend an open gym.

She described the open gym and her first experience with the program as being “very personable” which she stated was reminiscent of her high school program, and ultimately played a key role in her decision to join the program this fall alongside an overall sense of feeling wanted by the program.

Ava stressed that she wanted to feel that exact sense of want from a program that Coach Howell and SVCC exhibited. “If they wanted me, they wanted me, and I felt coach Howell really wanted me, and I was going to be helpful to the team and felt very welcomed.”

Ava described the team as being extremely friendly and helpful either that being with the adjustments of playing the game at a higher level or to helping her out with homework she has been welcomed to the team with open arms, and even stated that being a part of the program has been such a positive experience it has led her to wanting to further her athletic career even after her time at Sauk comes to an end. “It has changed my outlook on it a lot. I used to have those thoughts, you know that I am not good enough but, I feel like this team just really makes you feel like you are and you can do that.”

Ava has more than enjoyed her time already with the  program having this to say regarding the rest of season,“I am really looking forward to the rest of the season, and with this being a community college I really love this group of girls and I want this to last as long as possible. So, I hope we go far this season.” Ava and the rest of the Skyhawk volleyball team are set for an action-packed rest of the season with 7 conference games over the month of October.
